After a successful premiere in Uruguay in August 2025, where it received the award for Best Uruguayan Documentary from the Asociación de Críticos de Cine del Uruguay (ACAU), Ponsonbyland will celebrate its Belgian premiere at the BELvue museum.
Two Countries, One Diplomatic Thread. In Ponsonbyland, filmmaker Ramiro Cabrera and podcaster Eva Moeraert set out from a striking observation: both Belgium and Uruguay emerged in the 19th century as buffer states, nations shaped within a complex geopolitical balance of power between rival empires.
The film explores the role of British diplomat Lord John Ponsonby, who was involved in both Belgian independence and the founding of Uruguay. What does it mean for a country to be born “in between” greater powers? And how does that origin continue to shape national identity today?
The Belgian premiere is part of “Democracy Mondays,” within King Baudouin Foundation’s Democracy Programme, and is held with the support of the Embassy of Uruguay in Belgium.
