Educational project focusing on politics and debate. Topic: Getting young people involved in politics

For an entire school year, more than 400 young people from the last two years of secondary education in Brussels and some thirty teachers will get involved in debates and politics.

In its first year (20222023), no fewer than twelve French-speaking secondary schools from across all types of education, i.e. a total of 22 classes, are taking part in a project entitled Getting young people get involved in politics with a focus on addressing inequalities.

From formulating an issue to speaking in the public arena, the pupils will experience the entire political process as the year progresses. The project will conclude with a session at which young people will have the opportunity to make their opinions heard in public.

The project has three stages:

  • Classroom From the start of the school year, there will be activities to help train young people to examine the nuances of an issue, address it in depth and express an opinion on it. They will learn to support their position with arguments and to discuss the issue in a respectful setting.
  • Meetings: At two specific times, all the pupils will meet and discuss the issue with each other, as well as with political actors and experts (graphic designers, journalists, etc.). These meetings will aim to make young people aware of diverse points of view and help them to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Final event: At the end of the project, each group of pupils who have worked on an issue will come up with an idea for a public activity, such as a video, stage performance, political debate, poster, written document, etc.
All the pupils will meet for a closing event in the form of a public exhibition.

The Debagora collective
Two research centres at UCLouvain and ULB have joined forces with four civic education organisations (BELvue Museum, Jeune et Citoyen, Infor Jeunes Bruxelles and the Committee of French-speaking pupils), to train – with the support of the Bernheim Foundation – the Debagora collective and launch this educational project focusing on politics and debate.
